The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) really seems to be in a fix at the moment. With production plateuing at Reliance's much-hyped KG-D6 basin, it is not clear how the ministry will meet the growing demand for gas from all quarters.
- Adding to the pressure is the Ministry of Power (MoP), which has insisted that 15.59 MMSCMD of gas be allocated to six power projects, worth 4,066 MW, finalized by the CEA eons ago. This is, however, only the latest among the series of reminders sent by the MoP to an unnaturally quiet MoPNG.
- These under-construction projects, which are expected to start drawing gas by March 2012, along with their corresponding gas requirements, as recommended by the CEA, have been listed below:
- Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited`s (GSECL) 351 MW Hazira project in Gujarat: 1.31 MMSCMD.
- GSECL's 702 MW Pipavav joint venture project in Gujarat: 2.62 MMSCMD.
- Pragati Power's 1250 MW Bawana CCPP in Delhi: 4.67 MMSCMD.
- Lanco's 770 MW Kondapalli-III project in Andhra Pradesh: 3.08 MMSCMD.
- Sranathi Energy's 225 MW project in Uttarakhand: 0.84 MMSCMD.
- GMR's 768 MW Vemagiri Expansion project in Andhra Pradesh: 3.07 MMSCMD.
