MoEF shoots down NTPC's plan for coal evacuation from Chati-Bariati, Kerandari blocks

In a blow to NTPC's bid to ensure fuel security for a chain of its plants, the MInistry of Environment and Forests has declined to grant forestry clearance for a railway line till Kharika. This line is a segment of the Koderma-Hazaribagh-Shivpur line and is essential for the evacuation of coal from the much-delayed Chati-Bariatu and Kerandari coal mining projects.
  • In order to prevent the coal assets from idling, the line needs to be completed by March 2012, very unlikely now, unless the environment ministry can be persuaded to change its mind very soon.
  • Adding to NTPC's problems is the fact that work on the remainder of the track is also not progressing as per its requirements. As a result, the timely commissioning of its Pakri-Barwadhi coal mine is also in danger of not coming to fruition. NTPC is constantly following up with the Railways to expedite all construction activities.

  1. Full cycle versus specialization . Should generating companies get into coal mining and everything else under the sun ? Can they mine better than the mining companies themselves ?
    I doubt it.

  2. I also agreed that one cann't be master of everything on its own.In my opinion NTPC should venture into backward, forward or lateral integration for become a integrated company but these activities should be done in joint venture or collaboration with leading companies of that sector like CIL for coal mining,ONGC/GAIL for gas,Power grid for distribution activities & BHEL,ALTHOM for equipment manufacturing.
