Out of the 29 states of India, the governments of only 18 states have unbundled their electricity setups, as required by the Electricity Act.
- Amongst the 11 remaining, five states-- Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand-- have State Electricity Boards in operation. The other six states, namely Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa, have power departments that are responsible for transmission and distribution of electricity to consumers.
- None of six union territories of the nation have yet unbundled their electricity apparatus.
- However, State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERC), or Joint Electricity Regulatory Commissions (JERC), have been set up by all the states. Further, tariff has been notified by SERCs in 23 states.
