Gas supplies to power sector-I: 25,000 MW of new capacity feasible by 2015-16

The Planning Commission has asserted that the installation of another 20-25,000 MW of new gas-based capacity is feasible by the middle of the next Plan Period. The body has based its projections on the back of estimates of gas availability delineated by the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons.

  •  From around 150 mmscmd at present, domestic production is expected to rise to a peak of 230 mmscmd by 2015-16, driven mainly by increases in production by Reliance at its KG-D6 basin. Over the same period, RLNG supplies are expected to rise to 52 mmscmd from 38.6 mmscmd today.
  •  This schedule augurs well for gas-based power plants, which have a gestation period of 36-42 months and are expected to attain commissioning right at the zenith of the supply graph.
  •  However, much depends on the ability of the Indian gas companies of India to actuallu meet these rosy predictions.
