MoPNG refuses to supply cheap gas to NTPC

TMinistry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has refused to consider NTPC's request for the allocation of 12 mmscmd gas to feed its gas-fired power plants at Kawas and Gandhar, at a price of USD 2.34 per mmbtu, as allegedly discovered over an international competitive bidding process, won by Reliance. The ministry has argued that the price for the provision of gas to NTPC could be not finalized absent the pending verdict of the Bombay High Court.

  • The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) had stipulated that the verdict of the Court will be used to take a final call on the issue, asserting that even the allocation of gas would be made only as available, once the power plants are ready to commence generation.
  • The MoP has, however, thrown its weight behind the power utility, asserting that the EGoM should implement, what it considers, the outcome of the transparent bidding process, without waiting for the court's nod.
  • It remains to be seen how NTPC deals with the seemingly adamant MoPNG.
