Import bill likely to rise this year, as international coal prices surge northwards

If the latest statistics on import of coal by India are anything to go by, India's import bill for the year 2010-11 is likely to head northwards as compared to the previous year. The website carries here, a brief country-wise account of quantity and value of coal imported by India during 2007-09 to 2009-10. Provisional estimates of the first quarter-ended June 2010 are also provided.

  • As per the data, India has already spent close to Rs 11,554.17 crore, as of the first quarter ended June, 2010, which is almost 30% of its total expenditure last year.
  • This increase is partly sparked by a rise in unit coal prices globally-- costs have increased, from Rs 5,348.41 per tonne in 2009-10, to Rs 6108.79 per tonne this year. Pertinently, international coal prices for the fiscal year 2009-10 had witnessed a dip. This is also exacerbated by the rise in demand from the power sector, which is striving to meet the enormous supply deficits.
  • Further, during the first quarter of April-June 2010, Indonesia seems to be the most popular choice for coal supplies, which stood at 10.24 MT from the island nation. In terms of monetary outlays, however, India has so far incurred maximum amount of expenditures on imports from Australia, given its higher prices
