Reliance Power knocks on PMO's door for Samalkot project gas

The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power Limited (RPL) has called for the Prime Minister`s assistance with respect to the immediate allocation of 9.6 mmscmd of domestic natural gas, to fuel its 2400 MW Samalkot expansion project, in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The company's urgency on the matter is driven by the fact that it has recently inked a contract with General Electric (GE), for the supply of the required power equipment. The American company has even promised to accord priority to the large order. However, without gas, the machinery is likely to idle.
  • Notably, RPL intends to commission the Rs 10,000 crore project within the XIth Plan itself and has already achieved various intermediary milestones. Notably, it has received environmental clearance for 1200 MW capacity, while clearance for the remaining capacity is expected to be obtained this month.
  • It also already has PGCIL`s approval to connect the plant to the Vemagiri-II pooling station, via a 2x400 kV quad DC line. It has further affirmed that water allocation for the entire plant has been granted.
