NTPC's first ever hydroelectric project (HEP), the 800 MW Kol Dam, is stuck on environmental issues. The Standing Committee of National Board of Wildlife has, recently, rejected NTPC's proposal to divert 124 ha of land, under the Wildlife Protection Act, as about 50000 trees will be affected by the move.
- As a result, NTPC has been forced to call for the Ministry of Power`s (MoP) intervention, for a solution to the impasse. The power utility's worries stem for the fact that 70% of the work has been completed and Rs 3,380 crore spent on the project.
- The company, in the past, has already dealt with issues like right bank slide and seepage problems in the main dam clay core area. This only adds to its troubles.
- The project, located in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, envisages the construction of a 163 m high main dam, with a rock and gravel fill and clay core, a 1600 m long penstock tunnel of 6.45 m diameter, surface-type powerhouse, two diversion tunnels of 900m and 920m length and Francis turbines. The project has an estimated cost schedule of Rs 4527.15 crore.
