Augmentation of coal bearing areas-II: MoP calls for substantial increase in domestic coal production

The Union Power Ministry has called on the Ministry of Coal (MoC) to stress on increasing domestic coal production to meet the full demand of existing coal-based power stations and at least 85-90% of fuel requirement for the upcoming project.
  • The MoP has pointed out that a shortfall of around 54 MT is expected in the supply of domestic coal to the power sector in the current fiscal and if no sustained efforts are made by the MoC, this gap will increase to 80 MT in 2012-13, around 250 MT in 2015-17 and, subsequently, to 400 MT in 2021-22.
  • Accordingly, the MoP has advised the MoC to aim for 10-15% increase in coal production from the existing mines, while putting the under-development blocks that have all the statutory clearances on the fast track for commencement of production.
  • Besides, the power ministry has called for setting up of more washeries to improve the quality of coal and vigorous follow-ups with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for expediting the pending green clearances for various coal mining projects.
  • These appeals of the MoP is inspired by its projections, according to which the demand for coal from the power sector will increase from 550 MT, at the end of the 11th Plan, to 950 MT, by the 12th Plan, and, further, to 1,300 MT, by the 13th Five Year Plan
