Port authorities hold up Krishnapatnam UMPP

The seeming reluctance of the Krishnapatnam port authorities to grant permission for the critical sea water pump house is hampering Reliance Power Limited's (RPL) 3960 MW Krishnapatnam UMPP in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Although the authorities have agreed in-principle to the location of pump house within the port limits, a written confirmation to this end is awaited. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is once again expected to take up the matter with the Government of Andhra Pradesh (GoAP), if no movement is seen soon.
  • Reliance Power bagged this project back in November 2007, beating Larsen & Toubro and Sterlite Industries, in a global competitive bid. The Krishnapatnam UMPP is the second of the three UMPPs that are being developed by the Anil Ambani group. The other two UMPPs are located at Sasan in Madhya Pradesh and Tilaya in Jharkhand. While both, Sasan and Tilaya are pit-head projects, Krishnapatnam is an imported coal-based thermal power project.
  • Notably, the unit configuration of the project has been modified to six units of 660 MW, each, as against the original 5x800 MW configuration.
