MoP urges PGCIL to work fast on power evacuation for Mundra UMPP

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has, over the course of the most recent meeting held to review progress on the implementation of UMPPs in the country, asked Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to ensure that the power evacuation system for Tata Power's 4,000 MW Mundra UMPP is developed in synchronization with the commissioning of the units of the project.
  • If things work out as planned, the third unit of the project may also be commissioned within the 11th Plan, which is already likely to see the first two units going on steam.
  • Coastal Gujarat Power Limited, the special purpose vehicle implementing the 4,000 MW (5x800 MW) project is likely to commission the first unit of the project by September 2011.
  • Tata Power bagged the Mundra project in 2007 through the international competitive bidding route. The project entails an investment of over Rs 17,000 crore, which is being funded via a debt and equity ratio of 75:25.
