CEA plans to finalize sites for additional UMPPs in Gujarat, Jharkhand by March-April 2011


The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has asserted that it is making all out efforts to finalize the locations for the second UMPPs in Gujarat and Jharkhand by March and April 2011, respectively.
  • Presently, the central agency, along with Power Finance Corporation, is busy ascertaining the feasibility of a host of proposed sites and expects to obtain the final comment of the Gujarat and Jharkhand governments on the matter within the next two months.
  • While sites at Kutch, Junagarh and Dwarka and are being considered for the second UMPP in Gujarat, the second UMPP in Jharkhand is likely to be set up at either Deoghar or Tenughat.
  • The site selection proces for these ventures was on hold for a while due to delays in the submission of required inputs by the respective state administrations.
  • The Centre has already bidded out one UMPP in each of these states with an aim to add around 12,000 MW of fresh generation capacity from these projects over March 2013 to June 2017.
  • While the Tilaiya UMPP in Jharkhand is being developed by the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power, the Mundra UMPP in Gujarat is being implemented by Tata Power.
