While the legality of Ministry of Environment and Forest`s (MoEF) go/no-go categorization of coal bearing areas is being challenged by various quarters, the fate of about 18,000 MW thermal capacity hangs in balance.
- The uncertainty emanating from the environment ministry`s mandate has taken a toll on a number of project developers dependent on various coal blocks that now come under the "No-go" areas. This is especially critical as the country already faces a shortfall of 83 MT coal in this fiscal year, a figure that is expected to go up further to 200 MT by 2013-14.
- Some of the affected projects include:
- Essar Power`s 2x600 MW Mahan TPS and Hindalco`s 6x150 MW captive power plant associated with the Mahan coal block
- Reliance Power`s 6x660 MW Sasan UMPP linked to Mohar and Mohar Amlohri Extension blocks
- Adani Power`s 3x660 MW TPP at Tiroda associated with the Lohara West and Lohara Extension block
- Importantly, a production potential of coal worth 660 million tonnes per annum, equivalent to 1,30,000 MW of power generation capacity, may get affected on account of 203 coal blocks falling in "no-go" areas, where coal mining would not be permitted.
