Private sector disappoints on Q1 capacity addition

The whole notion of private sector efficiency has been turned on its head, at least during the first quarter of the current fiscal 2010-11. Against the 2,499.50 MW worth of capacity addition expected from the private project developers during the quarter, only the following three units, totaling to a meager 500 MW, were commissioned:
-- The 65 MW Konaseema combined cycle power plant (CCPP).
-- The 300 MW phase-I of Rosa thermal power plant (TPP).

-- The 135 MW Warhda Warora unit.
  •  The lackluster performance of the private players has also resulted in a massive shortfall against Q1 targets for entire power sector. Out of the overal target of 4,126.50 MW, actual achievement stood at 2,065 MW.
  • An analysis reveals that the state sector achieved 80% of its target of 1,627 MW, easily besting the private sector's 24%. Surprisingly, historically a poor performer, the central sector added 165 MW during the three-month period, even though it had no targets to meet.
