The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has accorded its approval for Reliance Power Limited (RPL) to modify the unit configuration of its now-3960 MW Krishnapatnam UMPP, significantly boosting the prospects of its timely commissioning. RPL had proposed to execute the mammoth project utilizing six units of 660 MW, each, as against the original 5x800 MW configuration, ostensibly due to difficulties in locating suitable 800 MW component vendors.- However, Reliance still has one more regulatory hurdle to cross, in the form of a supplementary Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), reflecting this change, that needs to be signed by all power procurers. The government of Andhra Pradesh, the prime beneficiary, is currently evaluating the draft version and is likely to approve the document once some minor issues are ironed out.
 - The land issues surrounding the access road to the project site have also recently been resolved and the project developer is free to remit the advance payment towards deliveries of equipment. Other concerns surrounding commencement of construction activities will be analyzed by the CEA, which will furnish a comprehensive report to the state government for necessary action.
