Sites for additional UMPPs in Jharkhand, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, AP still to be finalized

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and Power Finance Corporation (PFC) are yet to wrap up the process of finalization of locations suitable for the construction of additional UMPPs in Jharkhand, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

  • Presently, the two entities are still busy ascertaining the feasibility of a host of proposed sites, afterdelays in the submission of required inputs by the respective state administrations.
  • While sites at Lodva, Dwarka and Anjam are being considered for the second UMPP in Gujarat, the second UMPP in Jharkhand is likely to be set up at either Burhai, Sikadiha or Punasi (Nokhil).
  • Further, CEA is considering Nagapattinam for the second UMPP in Tamil Nadu and Kakinada for the third UMPP in AP.  
  • Pertinently, the Centre has already bidded out one UMPP in each three of these four states, which aim to add around 12,000 MW of fresh generation capacity over March 2013 to June 2017. 8While the Krishnapatnam UMPP in Andhra Pradesh and Tilaiya UMPP in Jharkhand are being developed by the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power, along with the Sasan UMPP in Madhya Pradesh, the Mundra UMPP in Gujarat is being implemented by Tata Power. 8Besides, the bidding process for the Chheyur UMPP in Tamil Nadu is likely to commence next year.
