NTPC on track to commission Koldam HEP within 11th plan

Notwithstanding that environmental issues continue to stymie NTPC`s 800 MW Kol Dam hydro-electric project, the project developer is working swiftly towards its aim of commissioning all four units of the project by March 2012.
As per the latest update, released by the CEA, on the progress of implementation activities, various milestones are nearing completion. This includes excavation of the spillway area, wherein about 144.64 lakh cum, out of 169.8 lakh cum, has been completed. Further, about 90% filling in the main dam is also concluded.Further, while the stator for Unit-3 has already been lowered, stator assembly is in progress at the fourth unit. However, concreting of the spillway is still a cause of worry for the power major, where nearly 50% work remains to be completed. So far, about 2.27 lakh cum concreting has been completed.
The project, located in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, envisages the construction of a 163 m high main dam, with a rock and gravel fill and clay core, a 1600 m long penstock tunnel of 6.45 m diameter, surface-type powerhouse, two diversion tunnels of 900m and 920m length and Francis turbines. The project has an estimated cost schedule of Rs 4527.15 crore.
