Gas shift helps NTPC bring down cost in western region

The western region of NTPC has been able to bring down cost per unit from Rs 2.20 in 2008-09 to Rs 1.92 last fiscal primarily due to substitution of gas for naphtha as fuel at one of its units.
This has resulted in the region recording a lower realisation of billing at Rs 11,287.42 crore last fiscal as against Rs 11,643 crore in the previous year despite producing 10.37 per cent more in 2009-10 at 62.5 billion units than the previous year, said Mr S.B. Agrawal, Regional Executive Director (West), NTPC, here on Friday.
The Kawas plant in Gujarat had benefited from the supply of gas, he added.
On the Ratnagiri Gas and Power plant performance, he said 1,550 MW was operational and one turbine was under overhauling.
Mr Agrawal said work was in progress for adding 4,480 MW at Sipat (1,980 MW), Korba (500 MW), Mouda-II (1,000 MW) and Vindyachal (1,000 MW). All these plants would be coal-based.
In 2010-11, the region plans to add 1,160 MW of which 660 MW would come from Sipat Stage-I and 550 MW from Korba Stage–III. Capacity additions of 6,640 MW, comprising Mouda-II (1,320 MW), Solapur (1,320 MW) and Lara (4,000 MW), were on the drawing board.
