Fuel consumption by Gas based Power Plants in the year 2009-10

According to the annual fuel supply report brought out by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for the 2009-10 fiscal, the gas based thermal power plants (TPPs) in the country consumed a total of 55.45 MMSCMD of gas during the year 2009-10. These 48 plants listed in the report also consumed a total of 671220.52 KL of Naphtha and 194550.95 KL of High Speed Diesel (HSD) as alternate fuels, since, against the cumulative requirement of 78.09 MMSCMD of gas, only 61.56 MMSCMD was actually allotted to these plants. Out of these plants, NTPC's 431.59 MW Faridabad CCPP, in Haryana, 350 MW Kondapalli CCPP and 220 MW Peddapuram CCPP in Andhra Pradesh and 330.50 MW P.Nallur CCPP in Tamil Nadu, made use of both the alternative fuels. Further, 4 others at Dadri, I.P., Ramgarh and Essar used only HSD.The remaining gas based power stations did not make use of the alternative fuels.
Notably, these power plants have a total generation capacity of 15,769.27 MW, out of which some 6,252.65 MW is run by the central sector players, like NTPC, Ratnagiri Gas & Power Private Limited, North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited, while 3,651.12 MW is operated by the state utilities, such as Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited, TNEB, ASEB, amongst others. The rest are run by private players, like Tata Power Company Limited, Torrent Power Generation Limited, Gautami Power Limited, etc.
