NTPC completes steam blowing at Dadri Unit-6

It seems that NTPC is finally doing a good job with respect to the timely commissioning of its power projects. The sixth 490 MW unit at state-run utility's power project at Dadri, in Uttar Pradesh, is likely to go steam by July 2010, around six month ahead of its original commissioning schedule of January 2011. NTPC has successfully completed the steam blowing test for this unit, a major activity for the commissioning of the steam generator. Further, in the balance-of-plant (BoP) segment, erection of the coal feeder has been commenced at this new generation unit.

Pertinently, power major commissioned the fifth unit of this stage-II expansion project, which is scheduled to provide power during the forthcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG), in January 2010, against its original commissioning schedule of August 2010. The fifth 490 MW unit was synchronized on December 25, 2009 and reached its full load of 490 MW on January 29, 2010.

With the commissioning of the sixth unit, the total installed capacity of the project would stand at 1,820 MW. Stage-I of the project, worth 840 MW, comprises of four units of 210 MW capacity, operational since the early 90s, while the Stage-II expansion envisages setting up of two units of 490 MW capacity, each. NTPC is executing two other thermal power projects-- the 3x500 MW Jhajjar and the 2x490 MW Dadri extension stage-II-- in the national capital region, to meet the heightened power demand, which is likely to exceed 4,000 MW by October 2010, at the advent of the US$ 17.5 billion event.
