NTPC, JIPL to work Kerandari, Pakri Barwadih together? NTPC seeks CMPDIL's views

NTPC has now appealed to the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDIL) to furnish its comments on the power utility's proposal, seeking to mine its Kerandari A and Pakri-Barwadih blocks in conjunction with the Kerandari B and C coal blocks, allotted to Jharkhand Integrated Power for the 4000 MW Tilaiya UMPP. NTPC and JIPL assert that working together on these two sets of assets would enable recovery of large quantities of coal, which would otherwise be trapped below the barrier and batter of the block boundaries.
  • According to the two, the proposal, if implemented, can save about 200 million tonnes of coal reserves for the country, since the companies would be able to circumvent statutory requirements of a 15 meter buffer between mining lease areas of different companies.
  • Additionally, as per coal ministry requirements, in order to maintain stability of coal mining pits, the slopes are designed at an angle that is determined by the depth of the mine. Coal under these slopes cannot be mined, resulting in batter losses.
  • Importantly, the Standing Committee of the coal ministry for approval of mining plans has also recommended the proposal.
