Land acquisition problems plague NTPC's Pakri Barwadih coal block

NTPC Limited has expressed serious concerns over the slow land acquisition process for its Pakri Barwadih coal block. Till date, compensation of Rs 10.52 crore has been released to 231 people towards 105.22 acres of land, under the Coal Bearing Areas Act, out of a total 448.53 acres.
  • Additionally, under the NTPC has offered a payment of Rs 22.73 crore, to 660 project affected people, towards 224.38 acres of land.
  • However, physical possession of 51 acres for R&R colony and 3.5 acres for a substation is still under progress. Until now, transfer of only 3.67 acres of government land, out of 687.87 acres, has been approved by the Government of Bihar. The state government is taking its time owing to a lack of policy dealing with encroachers that have been present on the land for less than 30 years.
  • In addition to this, due to denial of forest clearance by Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), the Koderma-Hazaribagh-Banadag railway link is still under construction. The railway link is crucial for coal evacuation from the coal block.
