Adani Group mulls another 4,000 MW plant at Mundra

After investing nearly Rs 16,000 crore in its upcoming 4,620 MW coal-fired thermal power plant at Mundra, the Adani Group is now considering setting up yet another 4,000 MW coal-fired plant in the vicinity of the existing one in Gujarat's Kutch district. The proposed plant may come up at Bhadresar, a small town between Mundra and Adipur, which are linked with a private rail line developed by the Adanis, industry sources told.
Mr Gautam Adani, Chairman, had said here last week that the Group is evaluating opportunities for investing around Rs 35,000 crore at Mundra. The Adanis have so far invested Rs 3,500 crore at Mundra Port with another Rs 2,500 crore lined up for its ongoing expansion. With the new power plant under consideration, the investments of the Group in Kutch district would be between Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000 crore, the sources said.
The Mundra Port is gradually emerging as the preferred port by both importers and exporters. In 2009-10, it handled 40 million tonnes of cargo. “We are expecting to cross the 100 million tonne (mt) mark by 2012-13,” he added. With the possible addition of another 4,000 MW by the Adanis, Mundra is expected to emerge as India's largest coal-fired thermal power producing hub with 12,620 MW capacity.
