In a bid to kick-off construction activities for its proposed captive port at the coastal town of Marakkanam, in Tamil Nadu, NTPC has, now, called on the Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) seeking its support for the acquisition of the requisite clearance from the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board. The captive port is to be developed to receive up to 10 million tonnes of coal per annum (MTPA) from overseas collieries, to meet the fuel needs of NTPC`s 4,000 MW, imported coal-based thermal power project (TPP) in the Viluppuram district of the state. The power major has already completed the feasibility studies for the construction of a deep-water open jetty at the proposed site.
The Marakkanam power project has been proposed to be developed in two phases, consisting of two-1,000 MW units, each. The land requirement for the project has estimated to be 3,000 acres, which will be utilized for the development of the main plant, township, ash disposal zone and other associated facilities. Sea water from the Bay of Bengal would be desalinated for cooling condensers and to meet the water requirements of the boilers. The total water requirement of the project has been pegged at 20,000 m3/hr.
The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has recently prescribed terms-of-reference (ToR) to NTPC, for the preparation of the environmental-impact-assessment (EIA) report and to design the environment-management-plan (EMP) for the TPP, which was originally conceived with five 800 MW units.
