Obviously unhappy over the Bangladesh government`s apparent reluctance to award the operation and maintenance (O&M) contract for the Siddhirganj peaking power station to the Indian power major, NTPC, the Indian government has asked the Bangladeshi authorities to take appropriate action. The Indian side was forced to raise this issue, during the recent meeting of the Joint Working Group on cooperation in power sector, following the Bangladesh Power Development Board`s (BPDB) not issuing the letter of award to the Indian utility, which even emerged as the lowest bidder for the contract. However, no assurance in this regard was forthcoming from the Bangladeshi delegation, led by Mofazzel Hossain, the Joint Secretary (Development), of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Significantly, NTPC presumed to have bagged the contract for the O&M of the 2x120 MW and 2x150 MW power plants at the Siddhirganj power complex, in a competitive bid floated, earlier, by the Government of Bangladesh-run utility. NTPC submitted its bid against a World Bank-funded tender, calling for an "O&M Service Provider" for the power station. The World Bank is providing a $350 million credit to the power plant, located southeast of Dhaka.
