NTPC's Korba-III unit to be on stream by Oct'10

After initial hiccups, NTPC`s 500 MW coal-fired unit at Korba-III thermal power project (TPP), in Chattisgarh, is now seemingly picked up pace and is likely to be operational by the third quarter of the ongoing fiscal. According to the power major, the units is excepted to achieve full-load by October 2010, against its original schedule of August 2009. As per the revised schedule the commissioning of the project was expected by February 2010.The execution of the project has been hampered, mainly, due to the delayed execution of civil work by the contractor, Subhash Projects and Marketing Limited (SPML), besides, constraints to land acquisition for the construction of the ash dyke. SPML was awarded the contract for the civil work of the main plant in September 2006, with a deadline of June 2010. On the brighter side, boiler hydro testing for the unit has been completed, while steam blow activity is due to be completed by the end of this month. The project was granted clearance by the Ministry of Environmental Clearance (MoEF) in August 2006
Working with a deep sense of urgency, NTPC`s Chairman R S Sharma is, reportedly, pushing BHEL, the main plant package supplier, hard to wind up the remaining work for the main plant as soon as possible. What is more, NTPC has also spruced up its monitoring mechanism, by using video conferencing technology to obtain site video feeds and oversee the development its projects, a measure that seems to be working to the advantage of the company.
