BHEL's history repeats itself at NTPC's Indira Gandhi STPP

The commissioning target for NTPC's 1500 MW Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project (STPP), located in the Jhajjar district of Haryana, has been deferred to the next fiscal, 2011-12. The main reason for the delay at the project is problems with equipment supplied by BHEL, the contracted agency. Issues with the IP Turbine inner casing for, both, units 2 and 3, is proving to be problematic. In this regard, NTPC has sought the intervention of the Ministry of Power, so that the project, at the very least, can proceed to meet its latest commissioning deadline of August 2011.
The project, being developed by Aravali Power Company Private Limited, a joint venture between NTPC, Indraprasth Power Generation Corporation Private Limited (IPGCPL) and Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL), was expected to meet a segment of the power needs of the impending commonwealth games in the capital. However, BHEL's lapses have rendered this a remote possibility. It is hoped that at least the first unit of the project, which is now expected to be commissioned barely one month before the start of the games, can contribute in meeting the heightened power demand expected from October 2010 onwards.
