According to the report of the a committee formed by the government--drawing experts from IIT, Central Water Commission (CWC), NTPC and the environment ministry-- to investigate into the possible consequences of abandoning NTPC's 600 MW Loharinag Pala hydroelectric project, being developed on the Bhagirathi river in Uttarakhand, the committee has proposed to dismantle the project, keeping in mind the environmental impact of the project. While the move amply signifies a heightened sense of concern for the environment, it is being said that the step has political underpinnings as well.
While noting the possible dangers of pursuing this project, the panel pointed out that frequent blasting during excavation of a requisite of the tunnel had weakened the houses in the villages located close to the project site. Moreover, concerns were also expressed that the damages already inflicted by the Tehri dam and Maneri Bhai-I and II barrages to the free-flowing character of the river Bhagirathi are likely to be accentuated, in case the Loharinag Pala is developed.
