A cumulative growth of 5.22% in energy generation was recorded over the first four months of the financial year 2010-11. As compared to an actual generation of 2,52,946 million units (MU) registered during the same period of the previous fiscal, around 2,66,140 MU was generated during April-July 2010. This was, however, lower than the target, of 2,68,484 MU, as per the electrical energy generation data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
According to CEA, thermal, nuclear and hydro power generation exhibited growth rates of 4.53%, 23.03% and 6.34%, respectively, against the corresponding figures of 2009-10. Further, imports from Bhutan exhibited a growth of 6.65%, against the 1,929 MU seen the same period last year. During April-July 2010, against an import target of 2,501 MU for the period, 2,057 MU was actually wheeled from the eastern-neighboring kingdom.
Pertinently, hydel and nuclear power generating segments exceeded their respective targets for the period. While actual hydropower generation stood at 38,504 MU, against the target of 37,881 MU and the corresponding last year`s figure of 36,207 MU, nuclear generation was recorded at 6,932 MU, against the four months` cumulative goal of 6,841 MU, as well as the 5,635 MU registered in April-July 2009. However, the cumulative thermal generation during the quarter was 2,18,647 MU, against a target of 2,21,261 MU. Thermal generation for April-July 2009 stood at 2,09,175 MU.
