The tug of war between the power and coal ministries over shifting the location of NTPC's North Karanpura thermal power station (TPS) from the coal rich location to another area has intensified following an alleged reversal in the power ministry's stand on the relocation and a letter shot off by coal minister Shriprakash Jaiswal to power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde coaxing him to go ahead with the shift.Jaiswal has alleged that despite consenting to switch the power station to an alternate site, the power ministry has now, surprisingly, reversed its decision.
--The coal minister said that the relocation of the plant will entail little or no cost for NTPC for the following reasons:
--The cost of the relocation will be borne by CIL
--The new location has minimal habitation with no forest cover
--Suitable provisions for constructing large tanks in the surrounding areas for water supply to the plant
The coal ministry says that the North Karanpura location has nearly 6 billion tonnes of coal under it and if a power plant is located at the site, the deposit cannot be exploited
