Although the two new 490 MW thermal units of NTPC`s power plant at Dadri are all set to power the impending Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010, the lackadaisical attitude of the Government of Delhi-run Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) may derail their prospects. The utility has failed to install the crucial substation at Loni in sync with the transmission line being developed by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) for evacuation of power from the Dadri project. The reliability of the entire transmission would depend on the Loni substation, the absence, or any lapse in performance, of which can cause the Delhi grid to collapse under the burden of heightened power demand during the Games.Over the course of a recent meeting, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, alleged that although DTL was aware of the exigency attached to the construction of the substation, it had not made the serious efforts needed. However, both DTL and Delhi government are still optimistic about the on-time completion of the substation. The two units of the National Capital thermal power project (NCTPP)- Dadri are the only ones, among the many envisaged to power the Games, that have achieved commissioning, so far.
