Power generation clocks 5.9% growth during April-June 2010

A cumulative growth of 5.58% in energy generation was recorded over the first quarter (Q1) of the financial year 2010-11. As compared to an actual generation of 1,89,724 million units (MU) registered during the same period of the previous fiscal, around 2,00,315 MU was generated during April-June 2010. This was also higher than the target, of 1,99,423 MU, as per the electrical energy generation data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

According to CEA, thermal, nuclear and hydro power generation exhibited growth rates of 4.44%, 25% and 9.86%, respectively, against the corresponding figures of 2009-10. On the other hand, imports from Bhutan exhibited a negative growth of 1.87%, against the 1,045 MU seen the same period last year. During April-June 2010, against an import target of 1,382 MU for the period, 1,025 MU was actually wheeled from the eastern-neighboring kingdom. Pertinently, hydel and nuclear power generating segments exceeded their respective targets for the Q1. While actual hydropower generation stood at 27,731 MU, against the target of 25,981 MU and the corresponding last year`s figure of 25,242 MU, nuclear generation was recorded at 5,243 MU, against the three months` cumulative goal of 5,082 MU, as well as the 4,195 MU registered in April-June 2009. However, the cumulative thermal generation during the quarter was 1,66,316 MU, against a target of 1,66,978 MU. Thermal generation for April-June 2009 stood at 1,59,243 MU.
