No further revision in coal prices now, says MoC

Putting all speculations of yet another round of revisions in domestic coal prices to rest, the Ministry of Coal (MoC) has informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal & Steel that there is no such proposal under consideration at present.

  •  The prices for F and G grades of run of mine coal were last revised by CIL at 8% and 10% of base, respectively, with effect from October 16, 2009.
  •  The other domestic coal producer, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), also revised its prices of B, C, D and E Grades of coal in 2009. SCCL had increased prices of F and G grades of coal back in 2004.
  •  Pertinently, since revocation of the Colliery Control Order of 1945 in January 2000, the Central Government has no power to fix prices of coal. The Government has even removed the mineral from the list of essential commodities, through an amendment to the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
