Here we have, the latest update on the coal resources of India. As per the results of recent explorations undertaken by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) and Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited ( MECL ), 109798.17 MT of reserves (correct till April 1, 2010) are now categorized as proved, as compared to 105820 MT a year back.
- According to these estimates, four states, namely Jharkhand, Orissa, Chattisgarh and West Bengal, account for about 78% of the total coal reserves of the country.
- Notably, the impoverished state of Jharkhand holds the maximum amount of coal, to the tune of 39633.05 MT, which is about 36% of the total. This is followed by Orissa, which with 21506.66 MT.
