Technical Group to frame forest clearance norms for underground mines

On the directive of the Prime Minister (PM), a high-level technical group comprising of representatives from the Ministry of Coal (MoC), the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) and Singareni Colleries Company Limited (SCCL) has been constituted, to delve into issues concerning environment and forestry clearance for coal mines. This team, headed by the Advisor (Projects) under the MoC, will evolve a set of forest clearance norms for underground mines. The Terms of Reference (TOR) for the group include:
Examination of feasibility of carrying out underground mining of coal deposits occurring in shallow and deeper depths in dense forest areas.
Examination of appropriate technologies for mining such deposits.
Evolving a set of forest clearance principles that are relevant to underground mines.
