State-run equipment maker, BHEL it yet to complete the supply of the gas turbine (GT) unit, to GSPC Pipavav Power Company's (GPPC) Pipavav combined cycle power project, that was damaged during transit from the Mundra port to the project site, in August last year. A 200 tonnes trailer, carrying the Frame 9FA GT and its accessories, while passing through a bridge over Kshatrunji river, near Bhavnagar, fell into the river, due to collapse of the bridge, causing damage to the shipment. Due to this accident, the gas turbine, which was to reach the project site in mid August 2009 was routed to BHEL's manufacturing unit in Hyderabad for restoration, after recovering the turbine components from the river bed. The components are still be to released by BHEL from the Hyderabad facility. Owing to this delay in supply of the turbine, the commissioning of the first unit is likely to be deferred by at least six months from the original schedule of December 2010. The project is expected to suffer further delay, as the local villagers have started protesting to the construction of the sea water intake channel system and outfall submarine pipeline system, proposed for sourcing the water for the project from the Arabian sea. The 2x351.43 MW combined cycle power plant (CCPP), has been developed by GSPC Pipavav Power Company (GPPC), a special purpose vehicle of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC), at Rajula, near the Pipavav port, in the Amreali district of Gujarat. BHEL bagged the turn-key contract for this project, valued approximately Rs 1893 crore, in February 2008.
