TNEB charts out major expansion plans

The Tamil Nadu Government has charted out plans to add over 5,100 MW of power generation capacity over the next five years to supplement the ongoing addition, announced the Electricity Minister, Mr Natham R Viswanathan.
Replying to the debate on grants to his Ministry, Mr Viswanathan said over 4,640 MW of additional generation capacity will be in place by the end of 2012. To this the State Government has charted out medium-term and long-term plans to add over 8,900 MW of conventional power generation and about 8,000 MW of solar and wind power generation.
This will add to its existing generation capacity of 10,237 MW of conventional energy and 6,761 MW of renewable energy.
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, which is facing a debt of Rs 40,000 crore, will inevitably have to go in for greater borrowings. But down the line, the situation is bound to improve with better efficiency of operations and fiscal management.

Over the next five years, TNEB will add 5,100 MW of generation capacity with work on these projects to start in 2012. The total investment in these projects is estimated at about Rs 28,800 crore.
Further additions envisaged total 3,800 MW with work on these projects to start in 2013. The total cost is estimated at about Rs 22,800 crore.

In addition, the Central Government projects include the 2000 MW Kudankulam nuclear power project from which the State's share will be 925 MW and the 500 MW project at Kalpakkam from which Tamil Nadu's share will be 167 MW. Tamil Nadu will also get 230 MW from the Neyveli Thermal Station II expansion of 500 MW, he said.
Renewable Energy
Tamil Nadu also has plans to set up a 50 MW solar park to give a filling to energy from clean sources.
