Comfort gadgets add to power demand

The absence of rain for four straight days forced Delhiites to seek the comfort of their ACs on Tuesday, sending the citys power demand soaring to an all-time high of 5,028 MW in the afternoon.
The purchasing power of general public has increased and they are buying more gadgets operated on electricity. This is another major factor that is leading to a rise in electricity consumption. We urge residents to be extremely prudent in using electrical appliances at home, added the official.
The weatherman handed out little hope of relief in the coming days. The Met department said the hot and humid conditions would continue for at least the next 2-3 days. The signs are not very encouraging right now. There are no systems, either western disturbances or low pressure areas, which can bring widespread rain over the northwest plains. The oscillation of the monsoon trough is the only factor that is offering some hope but that will bring only isolated rain over some parts of northwest India, said B P Yadav, director,IMD.
The minimum temperature on Monday was 28.9 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal. The NCR has recorded almost no rainfall over the past few days. July, the rainiest month of the year along with August, recorded only 111.7mm rainfall as against a normal of 225.3mm.Since June 1 till July 31,the city has recorded 202mm rainfall, short by about 75mm.
