BHEL applied for more than one patent or copyright every working day in FY'11


State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd(BHEL) on an average applied for more than one patent or copyright every working day in the last fiscal. 
"During the year (2010-11), 303 patents and copyrights were filed by the company, translating into filing of over one patent/copyright every working day," BHEL's Chairman and Managing Director B P Rao told PTI. 
The company's intellectual capital increased to 1,438 patents and copyrights, which the company is putting in to productive usage, he said. 
The power equipment maker's spending on Research and Development (R&D) activities rose by 21 per cent to Rs 1,005 crore in 2010-11 fiscal as compared to the previous fiscal. 
According to the firm, the R&D spending accounts for over 2.3 per cent of the total turnover. It had a profit of Rs 6,021 crore in 2010-11. 
In the current fiscal, the company aims to spend Rs 1,250 crore for R&D activities. BHEL's commercialisation of products and systems, developed through its in-house R&D contributed about 18 per cent to the company's total turnover of Rs 43,451 crore in 2010-11. 
The firm has indigenously developed and manufactured 1200 kV transformers. 
Clean coal, solar , nano technology and superconducting applications are among the focus areas for the company's R&D development. 
BHEL would be setting up a Centre for Nanotechnology in Hyderabad that would explore applications of nano materials in power plant components.
