28,000 mw power to go on stream this fiscal

Power generation projects totaling 28,000 mw will become operational in the current financial year ending March next year, power minister Sushilkumar Shinde said.
The country achieved a record electricity generating capacity of 15,795 mw during 2010-2011, he told reporters here. Shinde said projects with 28,450 mw power generation capacity are at various stages on construction. Of these majority 76% plants were planned on coal, gas and lignite, while the rest are hydro and nuclear projects, he said. Shinde said power projects with 9,585 mw capacity were commissioned in 2009-10.
India has so far been able to add 34,462 mw of power of the targeted 62,374 mw in five years ending March 2012. The present total installed capacity stands at over 1,72,000 mw. Data available with the Central Electricity Authority show peak deficit of around 11% at the end of February . The country aims to halve its peak hour power deficit of within two years and triple generation capacity over the next decade to meet growing demand of rapidly urbanising population and rising industrialisation .
