Power generation clocks 6.6% growth during April-Mar 2009-10

A cumulative growth of 6.6% in energy generation was recorded over the financial year 2009-10, ended March 31, 2010. As compared to an actual generation of 7,23,794 million units (MU) registered during the same period of the previous fiscal, around 7,71,173 MU was generated this year. This was, however, still lower than the target of 7,89,511 MU, with below-target generation in all regions, barring the Southern and Western regions, as per the electrical energy generation data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Pertinently, the country could meet the power generation target only for the first and last months of the fiscal with 100.93% realization in April 2009 and 102.15% in March 2010.
According to the CEA, thermal and the nuclear power generation exhibited growth rates of 8.5% and 26.8%, respectively, against the corresponding figures of 2008-09. On the other hand, hydropower generation exhibited a negative growth of 5.7%, against the 1,13,081 MU seen last year, mainly due to lower than expected rainfall in the country during the monsoons. During the just-ended fiscal, against a target of 1,15,468 MU, only 1,06,656 MU of hydropower was actually produced. Power imports from Bhutan were also lower than target for the same period. Against an import target of 6,564 MU for the fiscal, 5,341 MU was actually wheeled from the eastern-neighboring kingdom, thus implying a deficit of 9.5%.
