Gas-based generation posts 32.56% growth, on enhanced gas supply

The improved gas availability at the gas-based power plants of the country, subsequent to the commencement of supply from the KG D-6 basin, resulted in a growth of 32.56% in the gas-based power generation, during the fiscal ended March 31, 2010. The total generation from the gas-fired units was recorded at 96.59 billion units (BU), as compared to 72.87 BU registered the previous year. This achievement is remarkable, given the fact that a loss of generation of over 2.8 BU was reported in the sector due to fuel-shortage, mainly during the first half of the 2009-10 fiscal
In April 2009, the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) made an allocation of 18 mmscmd of gas from the KG D-6 basin to the power sector. Gas was also made available to power projects on fall back basis. With ramping up of gas production, the EGoM, in October 2009, increased its firm allocation to 31.165 mmscmd to the existing power projects, including the projects that were scheduled to be commissioned during 2009-10, to ensure 75% PLF for plants located in Andhra Pradesh and 70% PLF for the plants located in other parts of the country.
