Coal India Ltd,(CIL) to produce 461.5 MT in 2010-11

State-run coal producer, Coal India Limited (CIL), has been set a coal production goal of 461.5 million tonnes (MT) for the forthcoming 2010-11 fiscal. At the same time, the utility is targeted dispatch 462.5 MT of the dry fuel. The CIL has, today, signed a memorandum-of-understanding (MoU) with the Government of India, to this effect. The MoU was signed by Coal Secretary, C Balakrishnan, and Partha S Bhattacharyya, Chairman, CIL.
Pertinently, CIL, a Schedule 'A' 'Navratna' public sector undertaking, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal, is the single largest coal producing company in the world, with proven coal reserves of 105.82 billion tonnes, out of the country's total reserves of 267 billion tonnes, as on April 1, 2009. Presently, CIL provides coal to 76 of the 78 coal-based thermal power stations in the country, thus fuelling 71,055 MW of generation capacity. With a modest coal production of 79 MT at its inception, in 1975, CIL has been consistently increasing its production over the years and ended the fiscal 2008-09 with a production of 403.74 MT. CIL's targeted production for 2009-10 is 435 MT. At an annualized growth rate of 7.6% during the XIth Plan, CIL is expected to produce about 520.50 MT by 2011-12. Looking further into the future, CIL envisages reaching a production level of 664 MT in 2016-17.
