MoP calls for gas supply to six new, under construction projects worth 4,066 MW

As gas supplies from KG-D6 fields continue to dwindle, the tug of war between Ministry of Power (MoP) and Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG) over the supply of natural gas for the power sector seems to have intensified. In the latest round, MoP has demanded an allocation of 15.59 mmscmd of gas for six under construction projects worth 4,066 MW.
  • According to MoP, an earlier assessment carried out by the CEA has revealed that out of a total capacity of 4,793.5 MW of 8 projects, 3,153.5 MW capacity are likely to be commissioned in 11th Plan. 8Pertinently, MoP has contended that in the event that gas is not supplied to these six plants, not only would the projects remain stranded, but also testing and commissioning of the projects would be adversely affected.
  • It may also be noted that as per norms of the Empowered group of Ministers (EGOM) constituted to decide issues pertaining  to commercial utilization of gas, 16.22 mmscmd of gas is to be allocated to eight projects, amongst which the Samalkot expansion (2400 MW) and Dahej SEZ (80 MW) projects are the most significant, requiring 9.60 and 1.49 mmscmd of gas respectively.
