India adds 2,224 MW to existing capacity during June 2011

The Central Electricity Authority's (CEA) latest figures on capacity addition reflect upon the country's improved performance during the month of June 2011 as opposed to the previous month.
  • In June 2011, the country expanded capacity by 2,224 MW as against a target of 2,156 MW. The addition is 3% above the target whereas it had fallen short by 50% in May 2011. A majority of this capacity addition is attributed to the thermal sector with an achievement of 1935 MW though the target was 2025 MW for this sector. Hydro sector added another 289 MW, which is more than double the proposed target i.e. 131 MW. Although, nuclear and renewable energy sources contributed nothing.
  • Looking at figures for capacity addition under the Central schemes, 660 MW has been added as against a target of 500 MW while state schemes have fallen short of their target by 27%. Further, the private sector has performed better with an achievement of 775 MW, as compared to a target of 575 MW. 8The government had fixed 78,000 MW as a target for capacity addition in the 11th Plan, which was later modified to 62,374 MW during the mid-term appraisal (MTA) by the Planning Commission.
