Reliance Power asks MoC for denotification of Sasan UMPP-linked coal bearing areas

In a bid to effect fuel supplies to its 4,000 MW Sasan ultra-mega-power-project (UMPP), Reliance Power -subsidiary, Sasan Power Limited (SPL), has again called on the Ministry of Coal (MoC) to de-notify the 153 hectares of coal bearing areas of the associated Moher and Moher- Amlohri extension coal blocks..
  • The land in question, out of the total of 1,070 hectares required by the private company to implement the mining venture, is notified under the Coal Bearing Areas Act and has been vested with Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), precluding transfer to SPL. SPL requires these tracts of land for the OB dump and other infrastructural facilities.8In this context, SPL has demanded that the MoC should first de-notify the relevant land areas and, subsequently, direct NCL to surrender the same to the company. In what should give the private company some relief is the fact that NCL seems to have no issues with SPL`s proposal.8In its missive to the ministry the company, has asserted that the orders for critical mining equipment, such as draglines, rope shovels and dumpers, have been placed and supply is expected to commence shortly.
  • The developer has also obtained environment and forest clearances for the coal mines, for which the coal ministry has already approved a mining plan.
  • Further, the construction of Sasan UMPP is at an advanced stage. All contracts for the power plant have been awarded, while the entire land required is also in possession of the developer. SPL expects to achieve commercial operation for the first unit of the plant by January 2013.
