The country's largest power company, NTPC, has an installed capacity of about 32,000 MW and presently operates 15 coal-based, seven gas-based and four joint venture power stations.
NTPC accounted for nearly a third of the country's total electricity output during the year 2008-09. It has been allocated six coal blocks for captive usage, which are expected to produce 48 million tonnes per annum.

He also called for innovative ideas from employees to achieve the country's goal of fuel security.
