1,500 MW thermal, 200 MW hydro capacity added in March '11


As per a report furnished by the Ministry of Power (MoP) to the Cabinet Secretary and the Prime Minister`s Office, 1,500 MW of new thermal capacity was added during the month, with the recent commissioning of the units 6 and 3 of NTPC`s Farakka thermal power station (TPS) and Simhadri super thermal power project St-II, respectively, along with Unit 2 of DVC`s Mejia TPS Phase-II, each, worth 500 MW capacity. In addition, with the commissioning of two units of THDC`s Koteshwar hydro-electric project (HEP), the country added 200 MW of hydro capacity during March. Some of the other important developments during the month, as delineated by the MoP in its report, are as follows:
  • Against a target of 6,820 ckt. kms, 7,043 ckt. kms of transmission lines were laid out during last fiscal, with 1,395 ckt. kms added in March alone.
  • 75,498 million units (MU) of electricity was generated during the month, a growth of 7.56% over the corresponding previous period.
  • 1,401 projects, at a cost of Rs 5,846.09 crore, have been approved in 29 states under Part-A of the  Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme (R-APDRP), while 823 projects, costing Rs 15,974.59 crore, have been sanctioned for 13 states under Part-B.
  • As on March 31, 2011, 96,562 villages have been electrified under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), while free electricity connections have been released to 159.80 lakh below poverty line households.
  • Pertinently, the country`s coal stock position increased to 15.112 million tonnes (MT) during the month, from 13.231 MT in February 2011, while the provisional import of coal by the power utilities during 2010-11, was 21.325 MT, of which 0.788 MT is currently lying at the ports.
