Getting Jhajjar on stream ahead of CWG: NTPC hasn't given up yet

The power ministry may have given up on commissioning the 500 MW first unit of Indira Gandhi super thermal power project (STPP) in time for the Commonwealth Games 2010, but state-run NTPC hasn`t.

NTPC has asked BHEL, the EPC contractor, to augment manpower at the site to ensure the steam-blowing for the unit by mid-August, 2010. The idea still seems to be to commission the project by September 2010. The second 500 MW unit of project is expected to be commissioned in accordance with its revised schedule of March 2011.

The 1,000 MW project, being developed by Aravali Power Company Private Limited, a joint venture between NTPC, Indraprasth Power Generation Corporation Private Limited (IPGCPL) and Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL), has suffered delays due to the tardy progress by BHEL.

Apart from this 500 MW unit, two 490 MW units of NTPC`s power project at Dadri and five 500 MW thermal units of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), located at Mejia, Durgapur and Koderma, have been identified for supply of power to the capital during the Games.
