The first 500 MW unit of Indira Gandhi super thermal power project (STPP), which has been expected to, partly, meet the power needs in Delhi, during the impending Commonwealth Games 2010, is unlikely to benefit the capital city, as Delhi Transco Limited (DTL), a Government of Delhi-run transmission utility, has, so far, failed to develop the necessary infrastructure for the distribution of power from the project. Although, the transmission major, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has already erected of the associated 400 kV Jhajjar--Mundka transmission line, DTL is yet to complete the work for the substation at Mundka.
The project, being developed by Aravali Power Company Private Limited, a joint venture between NTPC, Indraprasth Power Generation Corporation Private Limited (IPGCPL) and Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL), has suffered delay due delay in supply of Controlled Circulation (CC) Pumps by the contracted agency, BHEL. However, over the course of a recent meeting, called for the review of the power assets developed for the forthcoming games, both BHEL and APCPL have expressed their commitment to the put the unit on-stream by September 2010.
Apart from this 500 MW unit, two 490 MW units of NTPC's power project at Dadri, five 500 MW thermal units of Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), located at Mejia, Durgapur and Koderma, have been identified for supply of the much needed power to the capital during the Games.
